Aldeburgh, Women and the Vote

I work at The Red House, the former home of Benjamin Britten, and we are organising a number of events for 2018—the first of which is to mark the anniversary of women getting the vote, at Aldeburgh Community Centre on Saturday 10 February.

It’ll be a discussion afternoon, looking initially at the background to the Suffragette/Suffragist movement, then at some prominent local campaigners (Fawcett and Garrett Anderson); but we will also be discussing what the change in law meant to women in the area (or anywhere in the country) who weren’t eminent, wealthy, etc. The second half of the afternoon will look at developments in women’s rights in the UK over the last hundred years, and the whole session will be hosted by the feminist campaigner Polly Trenow.

I’m looking for someone to speak about how getting the vote affected women generally in 1918, particularly those who remained disenfranchised, and to participate in the panel discussion in the afternoon. We would provide a fee and travel expenses.
