Sayers in the 21st Century

Proposals are invited for this one-day seminar to be held at the Institute of Advanced Studies (UCL) London, on the above date. The seminar aims to bring together early career researchers, writers, academics and independent scholars to explore, discuss and share ideas on the work and life of Dorothy L Sayers.
Sayers (1893-1957) is best known for her work as a detective novelist. She was also an essayist, poet, translator, lay theologian, advertising copywriter, playwright, reviewer, and a prolific letter writer. We invite proposals for 20-minute presentations on the central theme of Sayers’ work, its interpretation, publication and reception in the 21st Century. Proposals might consider, but are not limited to:
• Golden Age fiction in the 21st Century.
• Aspects of Sayers’ work as outlined above;
• Sayers’ approach to work;
• Sayers and Christianity;
• Feminist narratives;
• Methodologies of interpretation and Sayers;
• Sayers in a digital world;
• Place, locality and Sayers;
• Somerville and Shrewsbury; Sayers and women’s education
• Sayers and war;
• Sayers and the ‘passionate intellect’;
• Sayers as collaborator; Sayers and her collaborators;
• Sayers and stagecraft;
• Sayers, class, and societal change;
• Sayers and her contemporaries;
• Publication of Sayers’ work in the 21st Century;
• Sayers and a changing readership;
Abstracts of c.250 words, with a brief presenter’s biography, should be sent to m.rawlinson@ucl.ac.uk by 5.00 pm on 12 July, 2024.
