Presented by Glasgow Women’s Library, Street Level Photoworks & Glasgow School of Art, the first annual Maud Sulter lecture will be given by poet and former Scottish Makar Jackie Kay.June 20 2024, 3pm Glasgow School of Art, Reid lecture theatre, Renfrew St, Glasgow.
Beginning this year, the annual Maud Sulter Lecture aims to celebrate the legacy of artist Maud Sulter (1960-2008), an award winning artist and writer, curator, and feminist activist. Sulter placed Black women at the centre of her research-based creative practice, examining and critiquing the histories of western art in which they have ben marginalised, ignored and neglected. She connected past to present, the global south to the global north, tracing the many links between the Black presence in history to current issues and concerns. She explored the lives, experiences and presence of Edmonia Lewis, Jeanne Duval, and the many black women erased from historical records and accounts. Free, ticketed, in person event, tickets available from Glasgow Women’s Library https://womenslibrary.org.uk/event/the-first-annual-maud-sulter-lecture-jackie-kay/
