An Emigration Story

Three women, Catherine Murphy, Anne Walker, and Catherine Callahan were indicted for stealing a hat and convicted and sentenced to 7 years transportation. They were all old offenders, except one an 11 yr old girl, and they were not in the least affected. One said ‘thank your lordship, I was wishing to go to my husband’ and the other said ‘arrah, by Jacus, we’ll get a black husband, hurrah for the Lord Mayor and Perrin.’

Taken from the Freeman’s Journal, 25 June 1831.

As Katie Barclay begins her own emigration story in Adelaide, Australia, she is reminded of the trips made by many of the first Europeans to this place.
